We are still enjoying time in Lightning Ridge, there are so many things to see and do i this outback town. One place that needs to be visitied.

We also had a visit to The Chamber of the Black Hand. This is a must on any trip to Lightning Ridge. Phill has a great chat with Ron, who started out opal mining but then turned his hand into carving, you will be amazed at what you will see underground. Also you can shop for opals while there.

Forty feet underground , images carved and painted in the sandstone walls and pillars. This is your chance to tour this claim which has been worked since the early days of opal mining in The Ridge.

Chambers of the Black Hand has the only opal shop underground. As opal is Australia’s national gemstone, don’t miss out on this great experience. Our map location in Lightning Ridge, NSW is on the 3 Mile Road, 5klms up opposite yellow car door 7.

Phill continues his weekly chat with Geoff DeAth. This weeks topic is acronyms where people are exceeding their weights and percentages.

Up to March this year 80% of vans weighed were over their limit. Most things are an easy fix by just removing a few items or moving things around. 40% of vehicles were over their GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass). Of these some did know they were overweight and had already booked in for an GVM upgrade.

45% of vehicles weighed were over their Gross axle weight on rear axle. Often times you may not realise axle weights by going over a weigh bridge. That’s why it is good to book into a company like Check Weight, that way you can be weighed properly. Also something to note your front axles could be overweight if you have bull bars and winches on the front.

Of the caravans weighed this year 70% of the vans are over their ATM, (Aggregate Trailer Mass), of these most people know and are wanting to fix the problem. Also be aware when buying a 2nd hand caravan, get them weighed because the extra boxes or bike rack could be making you over weight.

Another area is tow ball weight 50% weighed were correct. They are either to heavy or too light.

Only 10% of set ups weighed were over in their brake towing capacity. Also up to 50% of vans were not loaded properly to distribute the weight correctly.

Check the website, book in and get weighed, it could save you an accident. Also check their Facebook page for hints and ideas.
