Surat is one of the original old towns in Queensland. Surat back in the day before it became what it is started building on the low side of the Balonne River but changed to the other side therefore the town by the river has never flooded. If you camp at the Fishermens Park, there are markings on the sign showing the flood levels which are huge. If there is a flood the town is isolated till the water subsides.

The town has a population of around 400 people and the main farming is grain and cattle.

This year the town of Surat is celebrating 100 years of the Cobb and Co coach, with a festival coming up from the 16 August.
