Yellowbelly Country Music Festival

Next up Phill is chatting with John Hallam. John is involved in the Capella Country Music Festival which is on in May. Next year 6th to 11th May 2025.
John talks about some of the artists that he knows and talks about other shows that are around.

Next on the show Phill chats with Ray Essery who is a Bush Poet. Phill met Ray at the St George Yellow Belly Festival.
Ray is from the Northern Rivers in New South Wales and been attending the the festival for the last 10 years. Ray was in the Navy and then Dairy farming and now bush poetry.
Ray left school when he was 14 and wanted to make money. He also raced trotters, and heard bush poetry around a camp fire and this inspired him to continue. He wrote a poem on the back of his tractor and recited a poem and continued on to some of the festivals around the traps.
Ray is 82 and loves it. Ray Essery is a bit like………… well…… like Ray Essery, he is unique, a genuine original, it is hard to imagine anyone else delivering Ray’s original poems with anywhere near the same impact. That same keen sense of history that is reflected in his own writing comes to the fore again when his
respectful interpretations champion the works of some early North Coast poets. Ray’s early performing career was littered with winning performances in major competitions and his recorded works, both individual and as a member of the highly successful ‘Naked Poets’, have been
rewarded with multiple Aust Bush Laureate Awards.
Tune in to Phill’s chat and hear Ray recite one of his poems.
